After her mother dies, Ann makes the decision to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a Silver Sugar Master, a highly esteemed profession in the Highland nation where there aren't many masters of the trade. Ann departs for Lewiston, where the royal family hosts a festival of sugar sculptures. She needs to take first place and be awarded a royal medal in order to become a Silver Sugar Master. In this planet, people control fairies by stealing one of their wings and using them like slaves. On her route to Lewiston, Ann unwillingly purchases a fairy called Shall to serve as a bodyguard. Ann is divided between letting Shall go and wanting a bodyguard for the festival's risky roads.
