Between humankind and beastkind, there was a major conflict a century ago. After the war, a yearly custom was proposed in which a human woman would be sacrificed and consumed by the King of Beasts. This custom continues until the 99th victim, 15-year-old Sariphi, is transported from her town to the kingdom of Ozmargo, a place filled with miasma where animals dwell and where humans are not allowed.
