In a tranquil backwater of the Japanese islands, Tatsumiyajima is the central island in the heart of a tiny group of islands. There isn't much going on, and the youth of the island attend school knowing that their lives are likely to be tranquil and unperturbed. So they have been instructed... However, the fact is otherwise. Tatsumiyajima is the last line of defense against a hostile and impenetrable foe, and the fate of humanity is at stake. The huge robot Fafner, the dragon that defends this last piece of humanity's wealth, is at the core of it all, fighting for Humanity's continued existence.
